So, if I was to try to tackle this myself, in your opinion I would be
better off trying to fix a potential bug in GNU Fortran than trying to
fix a potential bug in djdev203, is that right?

That actually fits the fact that a similar program written in C using
the scanf() function does work properly under GCC 4.4.2 and djdev203.
