You are connecting two computers (DTE) together, correct? You can use loop back handshaking (nulling RTS/CTS and CD/DTR/DTS) for one machine, but not the other, correct? Why not? Could you explain how can access the Tx/Rx (or TD/RD) pins but not RTS/CTS/DTR/DTS/CD pins on the "problem" machine? What pins do you have access to on the "problem" machine? Are you connecting directly to lines on the MB? Directly to the serial IC? In every scenario I can come up with, you should have access to the other lines...
