MS won't do it. It's clear. And if fixing those things involves kernel 
modification, it's not something you can easily get because whoever makes 
that patch must know the windows kernel very well and must go around the 
facilities that prevent unauthorized kernel modification, something that's 
MS is now very serious about. So, it comes back to MS or practically nobody 
else.

Depends on what you want/need. Vista w/o VMs is a bad choice for DOS apps, 
but more or less good for win32/64 development and other windows apps 
(though, compatibility issues still exist, especially with older software).

The average buyers are clueless and easy to fool. They don't know precisely 
what they want and don't want, less they know about what's out there, and 
what to ask for/about. And they often don't expect issues with which they 
will have to cope. Ads work for software just as for any other type of 
product. Actually, despite all of the studies of what customers want, as 
long as the product isn't worse than that of competitors (if such exist), 
it's OK to ignore certain of their wishes. The design and implementation is 
usually dictated by the manufacturer and it's hard to impossible to 
reconfigure what wasn't meant to be reconfigurable. Again, often what can be 
good or even perfect for a clueless user is just a PITA for an advanced 
user. The reverse is true likewise. Unfortunately, there's rarely a design 
to satisfy both.

Don't wait too long, it may never happen. If this had been a progress 
thingy, it would've been reasonable to wait and hope. This doesn't look like 
a progress and technically it's even worse, a regress...

Make use of VMs. Use the free MS Virtual PC 2007. Install DOS inside or 
older Windows and develop your apps in there. Oh, VPC won't work on the Home 
edition of Vista, it needs Ultimate, Enterprise or Business. This is the 
easiest and readily available solution unlike the nonexistent patch.
