This is an update of the port of GNU Gzip 1.3.12 to MSDOS/DJGPP.
DJGPP specific changes.
=======================
- There was a severe bug in the LFN handling introduced with the port of
gzip 1.3.12 due to the renaming of a macro. This has now been fixed.
Replace the old port with this new one is highly recommended. This port
is marked as release 2 in the dsm files.
All the changes done to the original distribution are documented in the
diffs file and located together with all the files needed to configure
the package (config.bat, config.sed, config.site, etc.) in the /djgpp subdir.
There exist a mekefile called makefile.dj located in the /msdos subdir.
This is part of the original FSF gzip-1.2.4 source distribution. I have never
inspected nor used this file, so do not use it or do not ask question if you
decide to use it. This port as well as all the other gzip13X[bsd].zip ports
use the usual configuration files located in the /djgpp directory to create
the configure script, Makefile and config.h.
This time I have used upx 2.9.3 to compress gzip.exe. First it has been
stripped with the strip command from binutils and then it has been compressed
using the --ultra-brute option of upx. I have tested the compressed binary
on plain DOS and on Win98SE and WinXP. I have experienced no difficulty.
Of corse, because the binary has been stripped no debuging is possible.
If you want/need to debug the application, you will have to recompile it from
the sources.
If you want to recompile the package, run the command:
make
Install the products running the command:
make install
To run the testsuite start the command:
make check
All test cases that use zdiff have been inhibited.
As usual I have configured and produced the binaries using stock djdev203.
If you are a WinXP user you will have to reconfigure and recompile from scratch
running the commands:
rm djgpp\config.cache
make distclean
djgpp\config
make
make check
make install
These command sequence will produce and install the binaries, info docs and
unformated man pages in the djgpp installation tree defined by /den/env/DJDIR
The port consists of the usual three packages that can be downloaded from
ftp.delorie.com and mirrors as (timestamp 2007-04-23):
Gzip 1.3.12 binary, info and man format documentation:
ftp://ftp.delorie.com/pub/djgpp/current/v2gnu/gzp1312b.zip
Gzip 1.3.12 dvi, html, ps and pdf format documentation:

Gzip 1.3.12 source:
ftp://ftp.delorie.com/pub/djgpp/current/v2gnu/gzp1312s.zip
For the convenience of the WinXP users the binaries has been produced
a second time using the djdev204 beta library. This package is available
at ftp.delorie.com and mirrors as (timestamp 2007-04-23):

Send gzip specific bug reports to <bug-gzip AT gnu DOT org>.
Send suggestions and bug reports concerning the DJGPP port
to comp.os.msdos.djgpp or <djgpp AT delorie DOT com>.
If you are not sure if the failure is really a gzip failure
or a djgpp specific failure, report it here and *not* to
<bug-gzip AT gnu DOT org>.
Enjoy.
