Sorry to ask, but it doesn't crash for > me. it currently also does never crash for me when compiled without that 2nd free; but I'm quite sure it crashed before under the same circumstances. But it is just a stripped down version of the original problem and there it still crashes (only in conjunction with the frees) although I check for pointer==0. I'm investigating again. thanks for the tip with -wall, but it didn't yield any new info. Lars
