ISO/IEC 9899:1999, Section 5.1.1.2 "Translation Phases", line 10 (part of the description of preprocessing phase 2) states: "A source file that is not empty shall end in a new-line character, which shall not be immediately preceded by a backslash character before any such splicing takes place." (the splicing refers to the backslash-newline syntax) Note that GCC will enforce this on ALL platforms, not just djgpp.
