Hello.
I found, in the source distribution, a file: Readme.dj. This explains how to
actually install svgalib for DOS (and I actually did what is instructed
there, before reading the file) AND it explains how to correctly use gcc in
order to use the svgalib libraries.
Unfortunately, this port of svgalib doesn't support the VESA modes. Oh
well...
