I feel they are OK in the context, since you have to pay for the
infrastructure.

I would be willing to pay for a fee (if I can afford, it of course ;-)
and as second suggestion on revenue stream, consider a subscription
based on CDs as well as used to be in the time Walnut Creek distributed
FreeBSD.
Perhaps some package of CD plus non ads part of the site.
