I may be wrong, but I seem to remember bison and bash flying by
here several times recently, not to mention all the refreshes to
handle XP.

Oh well, rejected again :-)
As far as 'maintained manually' is concerned, using 4dos I can get
a useful directory listing with time and description with:
[1] c:\cfiles\newpage\download>type mkindex.btm
echo %=<html%=>%=<pre%=> >index.htm
dir /zkmh /[!index.htm mkindex.btm] >>index.htm
echo %=<%=/pre%=>%=<%=/html%=> >>index.htm
and the html wrappers are not needed for the mini-faq. To use
such a directory would have to hold only current releases, and
older ones would have to be moved to a sub-directory.
For what it is worth, I have a \dnld\djgpp directory that holds
uninstalled zips. To install, I move them into \djgpp and run an
install batch, which unzips *.zip and moves the zip to
\djgpp\zipsused\.  I also have \djgpp\zipsused\oldzips\ to allow
me to back up.
I also do a "zip -o zipname" to set the file dates on zips newly
downloaded.
At any rate the result is that my installation contains:

Maybe these techniques will be of use to somebody, or they will
improve on them.
