the compiler is gcc (or use gpp if you are writing C++ to make your life
easier). these are all command line tools, so you should invoke them from
the command line. double-clicking on a file is not going to work.
you can also get rhide, an ide similar to Borland's Turbo C
environment,but I haven't used it.
