It seems like every group I post to or lurk in is experiencing this. A
lot of people's mail accounts are getting slammed these days too - to
the point where the isp says it's powerless to take action due to the
volume of spam, and the user has to just get a new account somewhere
else. Funny, since I thought open mail relays were an issue of the
past.
Not that it really matters, but I'd attribute it to a combination of
the worsening economy, and some corporations' apparent willingness to
work with spammers...MSN Hotmail anyone? You can't even use their free
accounts anymore, you'll get 50-100+ spams a day, and most of them
won't be caught by their 'spam guard'. MSN says they're not selling
lists of subscribers, but either they're lying, one of their employees
has a profitable side business, or their security is so lax the
spammers are getting the lists themselves.
And before you ask, no, I don't use this hotmail account. :P
