If it's done automatically, it just might mess up an already existing directory. I generally run 'unzip -l ...' first to see what's in it, and directory structure, so I can see where I want to extract to and not mess up the root directory or get something inelegant like \LOVELACE\LOVELACE or \DJGPP\DJGPP.
