OK, since no-one else followed up I'll do it myself: after much searching I found some old comment about an extra space embedded in the TMPDIR environ variable to cause this kind of failure - indeed, my AUTOEXEC.BAT had a trailing blank at the end of the setting line, and removing that made RHIDE work!
