Further to my enquiry and the response from Eli Zaretskii (posted below):
Thank you very much for your help.
(a) I soon determined the bug about the 'unmatched quote' from an e-mail
submitted on the news group.
My programs were saved under a folder which contained an apostrophe or 'quote':
/Jose's exercises ...which is a no go.
(b) & (c) thanks for your tips - I'll be trying them.

Please post the exact and full text of the error message(s), and
please send them to the news group, so that others could see and think
about possible reasons (I don't use RHIDE myself).

This could be due to a bad video driver which came with Windows. Try
to run RHIDE in full-screen mode, and see section 22.1 of the DJGPP
FAQ for more details.

You can easily toggle between full-screen and windowed mode by
pressing Alt-Enter. If you want the windowed mode permanently, then
after you switch to windowed mode with Alt-Enter, click on the
Properties button, and check the "Window" option in the Screen tab.

There shouldn't be problems with Windows ME provided that you set
LFN=y.
