Are you trying to build in the same directory as the source tree? I haven't built 3.0 yet, but prior versions strongly suggested you expanded the tarball in src_dir, and then created another directory at the same level, obj_dir (the names aren't important) cd into obj_dir for the configure and build. For 2.95, this was covered in /gcc-2.95.2/install/CONFIGURE
