Some new findings:
Win2k behaves as in all previous reports. WinNT behaves hmmm better
the djtar extract, complaints now very often (e.g perltoot.pod inhibits
perltootc.pod to be extracted, as are some files on hints/vos)
In both Win2k and WinNT, configure.bat (renamed to configur.bat on WinNT by
djtar) are not restartable without several warnings. It is not able to
(re)create ../djgpp.c and ../config.over
Win2k somehow refuses to access /dev/null, making any configuration attempt
fail
WinNT4/Sp6 crashes much forther in the process:

Just a note: AFAIK win2k has support for long file names for dos apps.
Otherwise your experiences look quite disappointing :(, I'll check the
current situation out in the weekend. OTOH, I wonder whether you see
similar problems with perl 5.6.1?

I have the tar handy, so after some setups, that should be possible.
For Win2k, I fear that the problem isn't the long filenames, but the unability
to access /dev/null. The FAQ doesn't mention anything but nut to install djgpp
on any /dev

This should be no problem. There is a hook in the djgpp libc which
makes it possible to handle special file names like /dev/null
transparently. I think your problem is that there is something wrong
with your bash. Are you using the latest version from simtelnet?

2.03 didn't crash on WinNT (but the build didn't succeed either), but still has
severe /dev/null problems on Win2k
The Win2k versions I can access, are all NL versions. Would that matter?

This is very strange. DJGPP apps should grok /dev/null with no
problem. Maybe there is a utility in your PATH which gets called
instead of a djgpp utility?
Btw, as there is no support for long file names under NT for dos
applications, you should unpack the source using djtar. It will not
work otherwise.
