If you only need C, try Turbo C. You can get it at http://community.borland.com/museum after registering. Or does the laptop have a 386 processor? 40mb sounds like it is a 286 (it is a typical 286 or 386sx HDD size). And how much RAM do you have? But - there is no real C++ compiler for such machines.
