It's not that weird. Edit your config.sys and put a line in 
there that should look something like this:

SHELL=C:\DOS\COMMAND.COM C:\DOS /E:370 /P/F

This assumes that your command.com sits in C:\DOS (it might as 
well be c:\windows\command) and that you need 370 bytes of 
environment space. You might need a larger number here.
