I use the old emtex, but with new latex. The TeX engine has not changed
its behaviour since 1994. This is version 3.14159.

If you have a version of 1998, you should get the most recent version
LaTeX2e on CTAN servers (in France ftp.loria.fr, anonymous, then "cd
ctan", macros, latex). You an a
