I would recommend Allegro WIP (i use 3.933). It's great. The Allegro Mailing List is a better place for Allegro specific questions. the link is on the Allegro Home Page. Your problem sounds (heh) as if your card has a volume mixer channel that Allegro maybe doesn't know about. Ask the experts on the mailing list, they'll probly help.
