I'm biased, 'cos I maintain it, but I quite like dzcomm (although it does require allegro, apart from the most recent version): http://www.robots.ox.ac.uk/~neil/dzcomm version 0.7.3 - pretty stable, goes with allegro 3.x version 0.9.7 - ditto, goes with allegro 3.9.x (the WIP series) version 0.9.8 - ditto, stand alone _or_ with allegro.
