While I can't speak for Jeff, the fact is that the ported CVS needs LFN
support to work. (I mentioned this in an email to you last October.)

That's the immediate reason, though there may be others. Unfortunately,
the CVS maintainers seem unwilling to offer any alternative to the ,v
suffix, judging by the comments on the CVS manual about the -x option
(before they changed its meaning to enable encryption).
