Allegro is a good easily installable graphics and sound (and a lot
more) library...If you want to explore 3d code..this is ideal...
However since you specifically mention about 3D...you might want to check
out the Glut library...which has a *lot* of examples and demos about 3d
related coding....
So personally if you want a lot of example code then you can try mesa and
Glut....

The Allegro library has quite a few 3D examples in the examples folder...
