If you're rendering a mesh of triangles representing a surface and
don't want to mess with *p*nGL, I'd suggest Allegro's polygon routines
(note: they don't currently use hardware accel).  Get the latest work
in progress; it's no less stable (and a bit more capable) than 3.12.
