I don't know because I haven't really started Allegro. But there are a lot of example programs that come with Allegro and could help you. You may refer Allegro FAQ (which is pretty good) also. Better start with some example program from Allegro and try to put your own picture instead of a default one, then change gfx mode, etc etc. Do it step by step and see what's going on.
