I got the cirrus card CL-GD5446 +windows osr2+directx5. I have no problem with exiting with alt-x, but sometimes i get the same problem (weird videomode, windows crashes) if i press alt-tab while compiling. I know that windows crashes and/or displays ugly things unless i switch to 'no hardware acceleration'. Linux does not crash, but displays ugly things with acceleration. Because of this,i think there is a bug in the driver or the hardware, but i have no clue about what to do about it.
