Not necessarily. QT, on which KDE is based, can be made
to work directly onto a linear framebuffer, theortically for
PDAs, QNX and other applications where the bloat of X is unwanted.
This would cut out a large chunk of the grunt work.
The drawback would be that the end result would not be able to
run X11 applications.. only KDE ones.
The other problem is Troll Tech, who own QT. Their licensing is
pretty strange, for example the X11 version is open-source but
the Win32 version is not. Adding any new platform, let alone
one as unusual as DOS will require consulting them.
