But the problem is that every new computer wil come setup with ME which
just forces whoever buys the machine to use it.

In your part of the world support for linux is great because of it's low
price and because MS pricers are astrnomic.

But in my part of the world where software piracy is rampant we can get
windoze ME CD's for 2-3 US$ ...So people just take it and install it
without thinking of other alternative software available
