-: IMHO you will certainly loose out if you stick to gcc 2.7.x as there
-: support for c++ exceptions is extrememly poor, and surely the fact that
-: the 2.8 and 2.9.5.x produce better faster code than the 2.7.x series is
-: itself enough to upgrade to a newer compiler.

Point taken; I should qualify my original comments to say that I code
only in C, so the lack of any C++ features in 2.7.x has never been a
problem.

As was also pointed out, 2.7.x has the advantage of being rather compact:

gcc2952b.zip unzips to 60 files and 5261021 bytes
gcc2721b.zip unzips to 37 files and 2725475 bytes

As for speed, I doubt I would see an overwhelming difference on my
old 386/387 box under DOS 5.0.

So, for my purposes, gcc 2.7.2.1 has been a good choice.

And I'd still like to see the return of the djgpp gcc2721* zips.
