Most Windows programs I've seen store information in the registry; including
those not by Microsoft. But they probably have access to some Microsoft
Registry API.

By the way, I asked earlier in this thread, "What's the difference between
'windir' and 'winbootdir'?" I don't think anyone's answered this.
