The FAQ explains in section 7.1 that on a P166 it should take about 10 seconds. What CPU do you have? How much memory do you have installed? Does GCC page to disk (do you see lots of disk activity) while it compiles? If you numbers are much lower that 1000 lines/sec rate, you might have a system configuration problem.
