Bash *does* use readline, it's in the Bash manual.

Thanks, this does work for me. Previously, I used all of them except
the second one, so it didn't work.
But I'm not sure this will solve the problems of the original poster,
since in his case, Bash didn't respond at all to 8-bit characters.
