But nowadays, so should 640x480 in 256 colors.
It's been around since VESA version 1.
Pre-VESA cards may need a driver.

But if you go to 256 colors, Allegro supports that.  And it supports
pre-VESA cards through VBE/AF.  You can find VBE/AF drivers here:
