OK, you may be using the 3.9.x compatible AllegTTF with Allegro 3.12.
3.9.31 is the latest Allegro version.

Allegro 3.9.31 is just as stable (on DOS anyway) as 3.11.
Most of the betaness is on the Windows, Linux, and X11 ports.
