It's all in the FAQ, section 8.14 "Why are DJGPP .exe files so large?"

Basically, compile with -O2 and link with -s.

I don't know why the FAQ does not suggest -Os which would seem more
appropriate in this situation.  That is what I use, but I have not
really tested to see the difference it makes.
