Do you find a makefile.txt if you "dir makefile.*"?

This is a "known issue" in GNU make.  Or is "this behavior ...
by design"?

Actually, Notepad does make real tabs; I just checked.  It's edit.com
that spaces them.  However, Notepad does append ".txt" to your
filename if you don't enclose it in quotes in the "Save As..." dialog.

When I need to make some quick changes to a makefile, and I'm not
running GNU Emacs for Windows, I pull up a Notepad.
