It's a 'well-known' way to tell the compiler which language you want to use. AFAIK, it's not Un*x specific. I think, on Wind* you can tell the compiler by naming the file *.cpp for example etc .. GNU compiler accepts *.cc *.cpp *.C to try to do the right thing (tm) and calling the right compiler (C++). But it this case do to the very nature of the underlying OS, you are running to trouble.
