Actually, I think DJGPP is as simple as it gets. Perhaps you
inadvertently bumped into some snag, or missed some simple solution to
some problem.
Suppose you tell specifically what are the ``overcomplicated'' things
that you saw in DJGPP. I'm sure each one of the problems has a simple
solution. Finding simple solutions might sometimes require some
experience, or reading the docs, or sheer luck, but you can always ask
here for advice.

I don't think you will get so much help in solving problems with any
other compiler. For a novice, support is really very important.
