You can try the zip/unzip from

(or even use / embed my portable unzip-ada !
  http://members.xoom.com/gdemont/unzipada.htm )

but I fear that your zip files just have
passed through a LAN or FTP as ASCII instead
of BIN... 

PK(UN)ZIP is strong as the rock as for archive
reliability...
