ROTFL!! I added -Wall and you wouldn't believe how many warnings I got!
After an hour (or so) of working through them everything was running
warningless and an obscure bug (that I still don't know the source of)
had disappeared!

BTW any way of avoiding warnings associated with

sprintf(buffer, "%d", long integer);

It reports that format should be integer and not long but works fine
with long.
