This is normal.
So it appears that the problem only happens when cpp is iunvoked by gcc...
Weird. I'm really stumped by this one.

This is normal: the shell is a Windows program, so it can access long
file names. Try "dir /x" and see if the short aliases are properly
truncated (which is okay) or have numeric tails attached (which means you
will need to reinstall DJGPP again using another unzip program).
