I'm sorry Chris, I don't know where you got the idea that the GUI was
intimately tied into Linux, but that is completely false. Whether the
user runs the X window system is totally optional.
As for using a better DOS, if it is a better command interpreter
you want there are better command interpreters than command.com
out there. Several alternatives have already been mentioned.
But I haven't seen anyone mention the Korn shell that comes with the
MKS toolkit. It is an excellent product. I have been using it for
the last dozen years or so.
I don't know how comp.os.msdos.djgpp and comp.protocols.tcp-ip.ibmpc
got included but I am directing followups to just comp.os.msdos.programmer.
