I believe http://www.programmersheaven.com/ have something for "fire" under their Demo code section. Basically you just choose a nice palette, average out the pixels in a horizontal line, then move them upwards. As each line goes further up, the pixels end up being blended with darkness so they die out and it looks like pointy flames. Nice simple effect actually.
