Or just open up explorer, go to view-options (or similar) and find the option "hide extensions of known file types", make sure it's unchecked, and when making a new file, right-click on the directory, go to new-textfile and name it. That way you will see if programs are messing up your names, and notepad won't mess them up when you re-save.
