The reason is because DOS is being phased out by Micro$oft.  Windows 2000,
according to the magazines, will not have DOS capability.  Therefore, unless
DJGPP evolves to work under Windows 2000, it is dead.

If an updated, 16/32-bit multitasking DOS-like OS is included with DJGPP, and
DJGPP executables include a run-time subset of this OS, its life is extended.

But if a large subset of the potential users and contributors to the project
say that they need 32-bit capability, along with multitasking and
multithreading, I'm sure that FreeDOS will evolve in that direction.

Otherwise, someone will just have to start from scratch and create a freely
distributable, commercially usable C / C++ development system for Win 2000. 
It is certain that M$ won't do that.
