> cd sub; $(MAKE) Replace this with: $(MAKE) -C sub and it should do what you expect. MS-DOS has a global cwd, not a per-process one, so anything that depends on the current directory being automatically revered will break under MS-DOS. GNU make has a special case internally to revert the current directory upon exit when you use the -C option.
