But unfortunately, "winbootdir" still exists even when you run in
clean DOS mode, ie. when win95 isn't present at all. It is set by
any DOS-7 based system, regardless of whether the GUI stuff is
running.
But I think I've found a solution: the VDS interrupt functions can
return a vendor ID code, which seems to do what I need. Hopefully this
will be enough to solve the problem, and I won't later find out that
any other platforms were stupid enough to use the same code as win95!
