I'd guess it's to do with the Emacs feature whereby kills are copied to
the Windows clipboard. Earlier Windowses (Windies??) limited this by
free conventional memory, so your kill shouldn't have fit within it.
Perhaps somebody, either Emacs or Windows, is confused as to the size of
this buffer and overruns it, or something? Does anyone know if '98
changed its behavior wrt the clipboard?
I haven't tried to reproduce this, but I have access to a '98 box if
necessary.
