This usually happens because somebody (you?) set the DOS box properties 
to require the MS-DOS mode.  There should be no reason for this setting.  
Open the properties' sheets of the DOS box, find this option (under the 
Program tab, press the Advanced button), uncheck it, and the problem 
should go away.
