I was reading all about the C flags and Compiler switches in the Rhide
FAQ last night, and read the nice writeup about Pedants and their
misdirection, ;-)...  

What I wonder is, what are the useful flags to use for a newbie
programmer?  I assumed -ansi and -pedantic would be helpful in me
learning to write correct code, but after reviewing the help file it
makes me think that most of the switches are beyond my knowledge.

Any suggestions for the switches/flags to turn on for a newbie?  Or
are the defaults good enough?
